I saw a note in my email about The Committed Parent, and for a second thought, “What’s that…oh yeah!” It’s been a while.
Great video. That girl is amazing, but as someone posted, don’t let that take away from the importance of her message.
I had an unusual early childhood during my first five years as my three friends were all girls. My parents didn’t plan it that way (and definitely would not have done so); it just happened that the couples they knew that had a child my age had a girl.
It meant I grew up with both “boy programming” and “girl programming,” and I’m very glad I did.
I remember when I was six or seven years old, I was told by some authority figure that I shouldn’t start fights. But if a boy hit me first, I could hit back. That made sense to me. However, they then said if a girl hit me first, I couldn’t hit back. Having been friends with girls, that made no sense to me whatsoever. I still remember that I decided right then and there, “If it’s OK for boys, it’s OK for girls.”
Thanks, Alden. It felt good to make a small contribution finally again. Best, Mark
